The real question should be, what CAN’T you do with old pallets?
Wooden pallets are no doubt useful, but what happens once they become too rickety and unstable to safely store product on? We recommend not continuing to use pallets that may be damaged, have warped wood, or show signs of too much wear. Below you’ll find a list of some of the great ways you can repurpose pallets for storage and aesthetics around the house!
Coffee Tables
Creating a coffee table, or any side table, out of old wood pallets is very popular for DIY’ers who want to make their living room a little more rustic. Tables are a great way to repurpose old wooden pallets – and might be one of the most straightforward ways! There’re a few options for you when “upcycling.” Attaching some wooden legs to make it look more like a classic-style table is a great way. Another option is to use more than one pallet to create a “crate” look, a more solid stand for your belongings.
Hanging gardens
The most important part of this build is to secure a section for dirt. Start by leaning the wooden pallet against a fence or your house, with the slats parallel to the ground, then nail in a fitted piece of wood between the slats to fill in with dirt, and then plant! For the most dramatic effect, vegetation that has vines, and longer bodies, and are meant for hanging baskets works best to create the “hanging garden” look!
Wine Rack
The same idea as the hanging gardens, except you can be a bit more creative with the wood! If you want the most simple cut-and-dry effect, you can simply cut out semicircles where you’ll be storing your wine, or create detailed stencil art if that tickles your fancy. Either way, using a wood pallet to create your own wine rack is an inexpensive and rustic alternative to buying a brand-new wine rack.
Bench
This one is a bit more challenging, but if you’re into the DIY scene and trust your own skills, an aesthetically pleasing bench could be in your future! The most important thing is to create support that at least two people can sit on – you don’t want the bench to collapse under the weight of two adults! A fresh coat of paint and some reinforcements around the bottom to top off the look.
Wood Walkway
This made the list purely because of how easy and rustic it is. Throw down some busted-up pallets and create a fun pathway into your garden! If the “shoddiness” of this isn’t your cup of tea, then choose the nicest ones, and dig them into the ground so they lay flat, and you have a walkway that meshes with the ground and you’ll get some traction!
