Wood pallets are commonly used as a flat transport structure that functions as a support for items that are being lifted by forklifts, front loaders, cranes and more. Also, wood pallets have started being used for various do it yourself projects such as creating a makeshift table or shelf.
Wood pallets have a lot of surprising uses. Besides being obviously created from wood, pallets can be made with a variety of wood types, the top two most common ones being southern yellow pine (SYP) and oak…but it doesn’t stop there. Here are some wood species that are used to create wooden pallets.
According to a study done by the USDA and Virginia Tech, they determined that SYP makes up 18.9% of all woods used and oak came second, making up 17.1% (in terms of volume). As a result both SYP and Oakwood contain several different species that make up the wood classification.
